Better than chocolate : First Live Jazz in New York city

In New York, in the late months of 1999, I was working as a waitress in a restaurant

located in Manhattan UpperWest side near a Diner where I loved to eat blueberry pancakes

with a delicious maple syrup to go with it. Miam, miam !

So, taking care of my customers, waiting their tables

taking their orders, bringing their meals and drinks the most gracefully possible without ( if possible ) sleeping on a banana leaf,

I mean an imaginary one, of course; I used to welcome with a natural approach, all customers who enter

the restaurant and wish to eat in a pleasant atmosphere. Around 8 pm, a customer dressed in black suit,

quite elegant, opened the entrance door, he was smiling at me when I held the door to let him enter in the restaurant, more easily,

I noticed he was a musician,

cause as an escort, he was carrying behind him, following him as a pet, an instrument which seemed to be a bass. Yes, there was

in this quite ordinary restaurant, though inventive, a musician now. What exciting it is !

He went directly to the back of the restaurant for leaving his bass to rest. Then, another musician

shown up, and another one,  I understand that there is a jazz band who is going to play tonight and set the

tone for a jazzy night. Waow! Live Jazz in New York! For a French and Spanish young woman, it was quite

a stunning thing ! Yes, I love music and singers but I never imagined being invited to listen and live a jazz concert

in New York, I honnestly didn’t think about it at all, and there I was in the place working and wonderful jazz musicians

were enchanting us with their talents and passions.

It was like a dream! They were not only jazz musicians but each one was very talented, some of them were charismatic

too and renowned, their boss

Augie, told me that they used to play in other jazz bars like Blue Note and many others.

I was completely enchanted, my waitress role gained in depth with the presence of these musicians

at my side, while I was doing my best to take care of my various customers orders and wishes.

When the jazz music were resonating in all the rooms, it was like a taste of

New York, I imagine, like in the old times of New York, where romance, talents, shows were blending

harmoniously with great costumes, voices and elegant people around, dancing and celebrating life.

Can you imagine a European young girl being immerged in a jazzy, feutry, velouty atmosphere

in New York city, and one thing but not the least, all for free ? Well, as a dreamer, a smashing event popped into my life just like that.

With a great delight, admiring eyes and ears, I was enjoying Live Jazz Music, four to five times

a week while I was waiting tables. One of the musicians, I am sure you are guessing it, yes, the bass player

was charmed by my young and guenine presence and I admitted I was charmed by his simultaneously.

Was it the charm of New York city ? The power of the music with warm and sizzling rythms ?

I began from this moment to have a growing curiosity for jazz music and whenever a jazz concert

was knocking at my door, I was going with great motivation and sparkles in my eyes,

guided by just connecting, embracing the moment fully with all my senses.

Jazz ! Such a delightful music !

And since that moment, I begun to sing more jazz music than ever !

So, thank you for the music you are giving in to me 🙂
